When it comes to window tinting each state has its own guidelines. Each state breaks it down to the level of tinting and which windows are allowed to be. The best way I could think of to answer this layered question is to break it down state by state.

Alabama: Front windshield is allowed to have the top 6 inches. Side windows and rear windshield are allowed less than 32% or 20% light reflection is not permitted. SUVs, vans, and trucks, are allowed 32% for windows.

Alaska: Windshield is allowed tinting at the top 5 inches. Side windows are allowed 70%, rear windows are 40%, no mirrored tints

Arizona: 35% or less of luminous reflection is allowed. No mirrored tints.

Arkansas: Windshield is only allowed 5 inches from the top. Vehicles that are from 1994 and later are allowed to have 25% light transmission on the sides and 10% light transmission on the rear.

California: Windshield may be tinted but they do not specify what percentage tint is allowed or inches of the windshield. Driver side windows are allowed tinting, rear windows may be tinted.

Colorado: Windshield is allowed 70% light transmission, driver side and rear windows are allowed 27%.

Connecticut: Side and rear windows are allowed 32% light transmittance, the windshield is allowed 29 inches from the top, and tinted windows must have a sticker that shows the tinting is within the legal limits.

Deleware: The only requirement they list is that you display a certificate showing you are within the guidelines.

Floria: Side windows are allowed 25% light transmittance and rear windows 15% light transmittance.

Georgia: Side windows are allowed 32% light transmittance.

Hawaii: Windshield is allowed to have tinting on the top portion.

Idaho: Windshield can be tinted on the top 6 inches, front side windows are allowed 35% light transmittance, and rear windows are allowed 20%.

Illinois: Windshield is allowed the top 6 inches

Indiana: Windows are allowed 25%.

Iowa: 70% transparency

Kansas: Windshield is allowed above a certain line. Windows are allowed 35% light transmittance.

Kentucky: 25% allowed forward of the driver and 35% behind the driver

Louisianna: 40%-12% on certain windows

Maine: Top 5 inches of the windshield, 35% for windows.

Massachusetts: 35%

Maryland: 35%

Michigan: Only 4 inches of the windshield

Minnesota: 20%-50% select windows

Mississippi: 28%

Missouri: 35%

Montana: 35%

Nebraska: 35%

Nevada: 35%

New Hampshire: 35%

New Mexico: 20%

New York: 70%

North Carolina: 20%-35%

North Dakota: 70%

Oklahoma: 25%

Oregon: 35%-50%

Rhode Island: 70%

South Carolina: 27%

South Dakota: 35%

Tennesee: 35%
