Window tint is not a permanent fix. It degrades, and the timeline depends on what film went on the car and what the South Carolina sun does to it every summer.

Standard dyed film

Basic dyed film typically lasts three to five years. In South Carolina, plan for the shorter end of that range. Extended heat and UV intensity start wearing on dyed film faster than they would in a cooler climate. The first sign is usually a color shift — the tint drifts from black or dark gray toward brownish-purple. Bubbling at the edges follows. Once dyed film starts failing, it does not slow down. You will go from minor discoloration to widespread bubbling within a season or two.

Metalized and hybrid film

Metalized film uses metallic particles to improve UV resistance over straight dye, which extends lifespan to around five to eight years. The downside is signal interference. Metal-based film can disrupt phone reception, GPS, and FM radio. That matters a lot to some drivers and not at all to others. Hybrid films blend dye and metal to balance durability against signal performance, and they sit in the middle on both price and longevity.

Ceramic film

Ceramic film does not use dye or metal. The ceramic particles block infrared heat without breaking down from UV exposure. A quality ceramic product from a reputable brand, installed cleanly, lasts well over a decade. Some manufacturers back ceramic film with a lifetime warranty. In South Carolina’s climate, the better heat rejection also means the film goes through less thermal stress each day, which is part of why it holds up longer.

How to tell when your tint is done

Color shift is the first thing to watch. Dyed film turns brownish or purple as it breaks down. Ceramic film should not change color at all — if yours has, something went wrong with the installation or the product. Bubbling along the edges means the adhesive has separated from the glass. Once you see bubbles, replacement is the only fix. Peeling at the top corners confirms the same failure.
