Window tint does block UV rays. Most quality window film blocks over 99 percent of UV radiation regardless of the shade or type you choose, and that number holds for standard dyed film as well as premium ceramic. The shade of the film has less to do with UV protection than most people assume when they are picking a percentage.

What that means for South Carolina drivers who spend real time behind the wheel is worth understanding before you decide what film to put on your car.

What UV actually does in a car

Ultraviolet radiation breaks things down over time. In a car, the main targets are your skin, your dashboard, your seats, and your steering wheel. The dash cracking, the leather drying and fading, the cloth interior developing that sun-bleached look on the tops of the seats — those are UV effects. They happen faster in South Carolina than in northern states because the sun intensity is higher and the driving season without cloud cover is longer.

Your skin takes the same UV load while you are driving. People who drive a lot accumulate sun exposure on their left arm and hand that they would not get sitting indoors. Dermatologists refer to this as unilateral sun damage, and it is measurable in people who log high mileage over years. The correlation between driver-side UV exposure and skin damage on that specific arm is well documented.

What window tint actually does to UV

Standard window glass blocks some UV, but not a large share of UVA radiation, which is the wavelength range associated with skin aging and most skin damage. Untinted car glass is not meaningfully protective on its own for extended exposure.

Window film adds a UV-blocking layer that standard glass does not have. A basic quality film blocks upward of 99 percent of both UVA and UVB. The actual UV blocking number does not change dramatically between film tiers the way heat rejection does. A standard film blocks UV at roughly the same rate as a ceramic film at the same shade. What ceramic does better is block infrared heat, which UV blocking does not address.

Does shade affect UV protection?

Not meaningfully. A 70 percent VLT film, which is nearly clear, blocks UV at roughly the same rate as a 20 percent film that reads as visibly dark. The UV blocking comes from the film’s UV inhibitor layer, not from how much light the tint shade is absorbing or reflecting. This is why clear UV film for windshields is a real product and not a contradiction in terms. The film is essentially invisible on the glass but still delivers the UV protection.

What South Carolina summer driving means for this

June through August in the Pee Dee puts drivers in direct sun for real amounts of time. If you do a long commute, spend time on the road for work, or drive kids back and forth across town through the summer, the UV exposure adds up. The case for window film as a practical health protection measure is stronger in SC than in states where summer driving is shorter and the sun is lower in the sky.

It is also relevant for leather and synthetic leather seats, which dry and crack faster with repeated UV exposure. Protecting the interior finish extends the life of the car. Customers who maintain a nice interior care about this more than they often say initially.

Windshield UV film

The windshield is the largest piece of glass in most vehicles and it faces directly into incoming traffic when you are driving toward the sun. Clear UV film on the full windshield delivers UV protection without adding any visible tint or darkening the view. South Carolina law allows this on the full windshield.
